expansion of housing - RSJ can go from one place to another or need to rest on the pillars?
I'm thinking of an extension in the back my house. At the moment I have two rooms (one on each side) with a porch in the middle which is neither use nor ornament. If I right through that I can have a spacious kitchen in the form of L / living room. I'm thinking in the back of the house. I know that we will need an RSJ to support the wall is removed (and there are two floors above and that there will be much to support) and use an appropriate structural engineer when it comes time for calculations. However, I'm still at the stage where I'm doing my mind up what I want. The back of the house is about 10 meters in diameter. Does RSJ just sitting on the tips of one on each side or are likely to require central pillars support? I need to know so I can get my head round what side is best for the kitchen, where there would be enough space for the table, etc. Thanks! (NB brick house is built around 1910-1915 if that is relevant)
We have a RSJ covering an area of 5 m above the patio doors - and is quite large. So that pass through a gap 10 meters requires a considerable RSJ. The side walls of support should be large enough to have a good 20 cm of the RSJ in it.
