When the mouse yelled back!

Author: Dland In Time

In the early 1980s were a very dramatic time for Disneyland. The company had recently survived the attack Saul Steinberg corporate event, and they had recently founded a new film of the two divisions would produce Disney to allow R-rated movies and not to such a Disney-focused market. Michael Eisner and Frank Wells, now come on board and then the energy was like a tidal wave, the assembly over a park that had washed languishing in focus and direction for too long.

The park was recently opened the New Fantasyland was what Walt originally intended, but the money went out to build, but there was apathy on the part score, a great reason to visit the park again.

Many will not remember or even know that was from 1955 to the end of 1984, Disneyland closed on Monday and Tuesday for park maintenance over the broad slow winter months (our visit, on average, from 4000 to 8000) per day. The last year, this occurred, was also the last year of the old ticket books, which was phased out gradually with the new All-Inclusive Pass were the ticket I seem to recall something like $ 8.50 for adults.

Disneyland had a team that developed the forecast attendance every year, and in 1984 presented an interesting problem for the summer. That was the year Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, and they decided that participating in this summer was either going to be brutally hard (was) not yet seen the park in a long time or to think it was a ghost town (because of the potential visitors: "Man, I want to go to Disneyland while we are here, but I bet everyone thinks the same thing, so, it will be too narrow. Better not go ..."). the park was a ghost town all summer. It is really amazing how masses of people with a single brain can think of. We see that the effect is often in the park when it seemed like all the waiting in the east-side with a two hours, Space Mountain and the west side had to wait 15 minutes with Pirates.

As for the low prices come to the park, the new team was from the newly installed accounting and aggressive team that was not the prices in the parks responded to the cost of living index informed, and develop a price strategy that eventually will see the pass to go from $ 8.50 to $ 27.50 in 1991 would be. Guests never seriously put Price complaints, and quite frankly, Disneyland was certainly get their money coming to them with all the new shows and attractions, which was held to begin, or in the Development. In 1985, the headquarters for Disneyland, Inc. (was responsible for Tokyo Disneyland and the upcoming Euro Disneyland), was in what was originally designed as Walt's private apartment, to be built across from the entrance to Pirates of the Caribbean (after the team moved elsewhere, the Disney Gallery opened) for guests. I remember a big sign that a comprehensive comparison of the two possible sites for the Euro-Park: France and Spain. In reviewing the comparisons, it was clear that the company would would be for the Marne-la-Valle, located in France.

I remember that one of the first projects for Disneyland, that the new team of Eisner and Wells approved was the purchase of the entire stage assembly (truss, lighting and audio systems) from the recent Rolling Stones world tour. This would open in July 1985 as a hugely popular dance experience as Videopolis known. The teenage participation levels have soared, as the stage alternating between a DJ and popular bands. It also brought a new experience for our security team: drug dealers. Security is developing a new team of undercover people to to try and combat these new wrinkles, but they were never successful. Traders were also on the discovery of the rather obvious security experienced hosts, and I think they only bagged a guy.

The Thirtieth Anniversary of Disneyland on 17 July was 1985, I provided the impetus for the revival of Disneyland have been too believe (and in many ways, the Disney organization itself). On this day the first was followed by many all night parties and events, along with the poison-Giver machine hand out awards to each guest enters the park in a "30" format (30. on this day, 300, 3000 th, etc.), eventually culminating in the 30 millionth guest in Park won to come (who has a high-end Cadillac). It was during this time that many of the typical Disney items and events were defined as, for example, limited edition Cloisonné pins (which, in pin-trading), and the years of parties / celebrations going to help attendance. In 1985 a decisive year for the company in many Terms such as Walt Disney Productions is the corporate identity has been completed renovated to the Walt Disney Company, MI Imagineering on the Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI), and so further. It also saw the return of visitors en masse, and from participation standpoint, it's really regretted it. Those days were present on the 6K: In fact, it was not unusual to have 6K through the gates in an hour in summer.

This was also the beginning of the Annual Pass Holder explosion that began in 1985 and really took over Gift Giver of the promotion in '86 was that each guest will receive a prize entry. Some of the owners of the passes were so often and get to know, the park and the actors so good, I noticed that many times these visitors knew more of what happened in the park, as the actors. This was also at the Merchandise team, the opportunity and means at the beginning of Unique design of all Disney merchandise found so often found today. A disadvantage of this rapid and explosive expansion of Disney paraphernalia, was the destruction of several Specialty shops, many had been open since the park. Instead of unique cowboy and Indian items only in Frontierland, gave way to this shop ... Disney Plush, Disney Candy Suckers, etc.!

Another turning point came in December 1985, when Disney-sponsored "Skyfest", was a Guinness Book of Records attempt, the largest Version of the balloon () one million, in honor of the birthday of Walt's. It was the first appearance of Lillian Disney in two years, after some personal problems with the new regime. The problems originally arose during the fall of the former CEO Ron Miller by a team of Roy Disney, who brought in the Eisner / Wells-led team. Dick Nunis was an experiment, all made out (with the assistance of Lillian Disney, and her daughter Diane) are chosen as CEO, but those efforts failed, and he would soon in order to distance himself from corporate headquarters by to Florida as president of the Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Roy Disney had the family again with his work in the Son of Lillian dethrone-in-law (historically divided, Walt and Roy's family had a very stormy relationship) over the years.

Complication, there was aggravated by unintentional slightly from Eisner / Wells early on: the 2nd adjacent Firehouse-level apartment of Walt and Lillian is a beautiful courtyard, providing an ideal platform for Parades and fireworks. Although technically all parts of the park belongs to TWDC (The Walt Disney Company), this area for the exclusive use of the Disney family had remained. When Eisner and Wells found out about this place, they immediately started using it very often for family and friends. Lillian removed all connections with society, and it was not, until someone this little faux pas Eisner, that he immediately referred to formally apologize in touch with Lillian is ruthlessly for everyone. Their first reunion was held during Skyfest. Although sentiments were somewhat repaired, Lillian gradually attracting more and more of the Disney organization.

Over at the Opera House, on display for several years in the pre-show area of the Great Moments With Lincoln, Walt shows two offices. These were not re-creations, but the actual content of data that have the park when it's time to finally configure the great room through his work and formal office has been claimed. I can verify that the actual TWDC documentary photos taken of the offices (a few months after his death) that the exact placement in detail, except for what, where the viewing window placed in the park have been (working in the office, I can tell you, his own bar by an electrically operated sliding wood panel that was positioned essentially where you were standing on that Windows) hidden.

In early 1986, Lillian had come to her private secretary to the park with a very specific list, and removes certain elements from both positions Prices (one of the most important was the special Academy Award for Snow White, that amount), the seven dwarfs in the package.

The next time that person back, was than we had told Lillian that her house had suffered some Firehouse floor water damage, broken by a water heater. I was part of the team that the inventoried entire apartment, and what I saw, I knocked a loop. It was like a trip back in time into the early 60's. The contents of the apartment was essentially untouched since Walt's death in 1966. A series of Walt's clothes, jackets and trousers, still hung in the closet. I remember, about a half dozen of his distinctive Smoke Tree Ranch head scarves in a drawer. There were baby bottles made of glass on a shelf, and on the bar counter, were all from the liquor price with black grease pen to write long came before barcodes. All of these unique and personal items were removed and returned Lillian. A few years later, I had the honor back in the apartment with Lillian, and she went to draw attention to articles and recalling with perfect detail, where and when they had received, and Walt said products. I could not remember what I had for breakfast the day before, and here she was before with perfect recall on things more than 60 years. A truly gracious woman I to first met in Skyfest and left me with some very touching memories.

I was lucky, with a number of people who at the time of processing overall work directly with Walt, and each of them has left an indelible impression on me. One of them was Bill Evans, Walt, originally set to its landscape Holmby Hills Ranch, and then would be to develop the whole range of landscapes for Disneyland, The Magic Kingdom, Tokyo Disneyland and Euro Disneyland. Often, the department went Landscape Batty, when he was at the park and asked for certain things that were not ready, to do his way and now! Bill was in his 80's but then had still incredible Drive and a crushing handshake.

Another favorite was Van Arsdale France, the founder of the Disneyland University, and most of the training programs that every theme park passes for each new employee Disney park in the world. At that time, Van was the ancient's supporters as "The Circle D is known (also known as the Pony Farm) ", next to the only remaining original house on the Disney property, and probably 70 or 80 years old.

I eat happy tales from a Club 55'er known as Claire. It was she who first told me during the first two weeks, was opened to the park, there was a live alligator pit in a cage in front of the Jungle Cruise. Every morning, would be the maintenance team and keep doing a 'gator expected, because the boys would often take a break and get out out of the pit and head into the Jungle Cruise. Maintenance would have to blockade the area, please call the Buena Park Alligator Farm, Wrangler and have a ride on the moving Reptiles (collect s), and place it in the pit. Claire told me she was the one who, after he nearly scared to death every week, finally stormed up to Joe Fowler and demanded the removal of said reptiles. I do not know whether the conversation, what did the trick, but apparently they were a few days later.

Back about the studio and at WDI, Eisner was like a kid in a candy store. He spent a large amount of his time at WDI, and (in a very calculating and very successful) move on the part of the Disneyland entertainment, they were given the same amount of attention Eisner. This would lead to a number of interesting (and often painful) Events such as; (Circus, State Fair, and many all night parties, often through the voices had called them to work: Disney's Drunkfest).

Circus shows and had some interesting elements, but was by far my favorite of the musicians shot from the gun (I'm trying to remember, but I think he was known as "The Great Santini "?). More than before Pirates of the Caribbean, before the queue / overpass was built, the location for the cannon. In front of the stage Fantasmic complex was built, was a much simpler wooden platform stage in the river at the mill on the island of Tom Sawyer. The artist and his team have everything set up after the park closed, and until the early morning, they were ready for the first test shot of a special sandbag on the approximation of Performers Artists would be weight. The idea was that the guns from the front of Pirate's fly to left across the river from America, and land in a network which was set up, more than 6 feet above the dock / stage. While the performer's mother sat on a bench you working worry beads, was the countdown to zero. An enormous boom sounded, and passed through a billowing cloud of smoke, the sandbag. The track was perfect, as it arched over the river and a perfect landing on the top, dead center in the network. Unfortunately, there is proposed were a few boxes, which was in place under the net, left, and when the 200-pound sandbag hit the net and there bowed down under the weight of which were in crates containing a huge crush CRUNCH! I looked over my mother with big staring eyes to see, they are working furiously worry beads, and her son with big eyes and a hand are working furiously to his chin. The other props and debris were removed quickly and the next attempt was to Santini. He put on his helmet and got his feet first into the cannon. After a few moments, he called to his assistant, and fired the gun! Santini came through the billowing cloud of smoke appears in slow motion, and I remember well to the hands and fingers are stretched out with a look of intense fear in his face. He followed the same arc over the river and landed dead center in the network, while the net-Grabbing with his hands and begged for his life. Success! The mother was still sitting with eyes closed, but I thought for a second, the beads were in flames, she worked they start so fast. He would then execute that trick later for the first time for guests less than an hour, and could be seen relaxed and easy as It was for him during the event.

In 1986, there was a large cable that extends to the top of the Matterhorn and a motorcyclist was driving on the cable, and then rode it in reverse back down. On Main Street, there was a cable that went to The Emporium at The Walt Disney Story, and members of the extended family of the famous Flying Wallendas performed a balancing act. There was also a keystone event in this area as well. The hub will receive extensive changes at this time. A large concrete rooms Pit was created in order the house all the planned events would take place, like a ferris wheel for State Fair, an elevator to the top prize in sight for the Cadillac GiftGiver Extraordinaire elevator, and the giant see-through metal ball known as the Globe of Death. In this case, there was a panel that down, and a motorcyclist and his bike kicked open, close the panel started with the bike and started riding on the underside of the ball until he had some of its momentum and began climbing higher, until he started to Loops within the sphere. Very loud, but very entertaining for the guests. State Fair was an even bigger and more popular event, but that's for a Future Item is ...
